I see and now I believe!

Good lord that is unreal!  It's simply amazing and disheartening to me to know that soupy mud can make its way into an engine like that.  I don't do any off-roading, but it seems to me that any 4x4 truck should be tested for this kinda intrusion.  AND...the design should take into account a reasonable amount of mud/water getting into the engine compartment and/or airbox.  Do they think folks buy 4x4's just to get a boat up a slippery ramp or to drive in snow?

I'm really starting to wonder if Nissan didn't cut the product development cycle short in order to get the truck to market.  And the way they cut it short was to not fully test the vehicle over a proper length of time.

Personally, I would think the engineers at Nissan would like to see this.  Even if it meant they'd have to admit to a possible design flaw.  The price they pay for that one engine rebuild would pale in comparison to the cost of a recall for failing inner fenders and the damage resulting thereof.

Wow....simply amazing.

Tom

Yeah he wasn't hot-doggin or show boating he was crawling really slow to cross the little stream but the ground around it was too soft and the truck just sunk down to almost the frame.  That's when he started to get on it a little more to try and get out, but it was hopeless in forward, so he tried reverse and was able to back out of the mess, but the fender liner had popped and that let all the sloppy mud to fling off the front of the tire and straight to the air box.  Basicly as soon as he got out of the mud his truck cut off and wouldn't restart.  His original air filter was compleatly satureted and when he took it out it actually sogged out and tore the element.  Also the fender liner popping out wasn't because of big tires rubing since his tires are stock size.

As soon as I hear from him again I'll let you guys know what's up.

Go check your fender liners!

Damn I just called my bro and he said that he was able to drive it back to MD (160 miles) and it burned 2 quarts of oil every 50 miles.  He's got two rolls of film of the truck and creek that he needs to develop and he's going to write it all up and send his story and pics to nissan north america, and every 4x4 and off road magazine he can think of.  and he'll get it towed to the dealer next week I think.  Like I said, I'll keep you up to date on the latest.

I haven't had anything that serious, but I have had other problems.  My Titan is losing it's paint at an alarming rate.  The truck had two paint defects at the dealership, which the dealer agreed to repair.  Before I arranges to have it done, paint started coming off all over the place, as early as 1500 miles in fact.  I have nearly 50 pitted areas on every body panel but the roof.  Most are on the inside lip of the wheel wells, but several are on the upper sides of the bed and at least 10 are on the tailgate.  The worst place is near the accessory tool box on the drivers side that comes with the utility bed package.  The edge that faces the rear tire is getting pulverized by road debris and is beginning to rust.  I have only driven a handfull of the 7000 miles on dirt roads, the rest on asphalt.  Nissan and I are going around and around about this.  They should have put some sort of molding around the wheel well, and larger mudflaps on it.  However, these things are not even available options, not even with the offroad package.

More importantly,  the pitted paint on the bed sides and tailgate is not the result of road debris.  It is just flaking off.  Everytime I wash the truck, there are more pits.

Is anyone else having paint trouble.  If so call nissan.  If not yet, watch the wheel wells and the side tool box, because you will eventually!!!

Well, sorry about your paint man but try not to hijack this thread if you could :)

Anyway He had it towed to the dearership and they said that there is no way  his truck could have possibly been stuck in that creek and sucked that much mud into itself.  They claim he must have been up to the hood in mud or something like that.  And that they will not replace the engine under warrenty.

So my brother has been talking to a good lawyer who deals with this kind of stuff...I haven't heard if he thinks the case is strong or not yet but he does need a little info.....

If your fender liner has popped off or come loose under normal to mild conditions please tell me.  The more people we can find who have had that problem with their truck the more the lawyer can show it to be a flaw in the design of the clips that hold it in place.

I'll update again when I have news.

OK, so his lawyer is going to bring it to court...hopefully a settlement can be had outside of court, but we'll see.

More info as I get it.

Holy Cow! ( Nissan is going to loose! )

I would not believe it, but I have seen it! Nissan's commercial of the 4x4 four wheeling through the mud is a representation of the vehicles off road capabilities. In comparsion to the commercial's enviroment that little ditch is nothing. If this is Nissan's way of taking care of there customers they suck. I have friends that have Toyota trucks and they are truely 4x4 ready and bury them up to the doors. Major recall!!!! A new engine cost $6500 plus labor which is close to $10,000 for a $32,000 truck that was poorly designed.

Nissan needs to fix this design flaw immediately.   Here in AZ mudding is the favorite sport everytime it rains!

Sincerely,

Akoni!

Ok, so I talked to my Bro again and told him about the update in Motor Trend April 05 on their Titan, they had their fender liner pop out at 7500 miles (my bro's truck has 10K)  Anyway he took it to his lawyer and he was very happy to see the update.  Turns out his lawyer specializes in these types of cases where the dealer isn't doing the customer right and he has a perfect record.  Also my brother has his own paving company and the lawyer just wants him to pave him a new driveway instead of paying him cash! So it is looking pretty good so far.

more later.
