Hello,

I want to a tow hitch to my LE, what is the cost savings vs the dealer doing iit ? I am pretty good at mechanics so i am thinking about doing myself also. Are our trucks prewired? Will it be abolt on modification or is welding needed?

Thank you

John

It's a bolt on, so how could it fit a Chevy also? If you get the factory hitch, which is a class IV, it will fall right on. I believe that there may also be wires for the 7 pin, but you might need to add some relays under the hood.

Bolts on, pre-wired.  Relays are included in the factory hitch package; my SE already had them installed.

If you go with a non factory hitch (I did), you'll need two things.

First, there is a "last mile" adapter that takes the chassis wiring into the 7 pin connector. It's about a $12 part. I had to mod mine with a dremel tool to get it to bolt into a wiring holder.

The second part is the relay for the park lights on the trailer wiring is not installed. (I pulled my hair out for hours trying to figure this one out.) I believe it is labeled "trailer tow 1" in the engine compartment fuse box. (Back right corner of the engine comparment.)

I can probably dig out part numbers if the dealership parts guy by you is as incompetent as mine is.

THanks for the Info Stageman,

I will probably go with a dealer hitch and install it myself. Sorry you had such problems.

I just installed the factory hitch yesterday on my XE. Like other have said, it comes with two relays in the box along with six speciality bolts. The quality is excellent, and looks really good. Everything (being factory) fits perfectly! The plugin for the lights is tucked up under the rear bumper driver side. The hitch comes with a plastic weatherproof snapin to accept this plug and has a special holder on the hitch. You will need to get a converter for this new plugin to change it from the round radial to the seven, five, or four pin connectors on the older trailers. It is available from Wal-mart for under 10 bucks. The dealer has them also but my parts man informed me that they charge too much for it and to just buy it at WM.

The two relays label "trailer tow 1" and "trailer tow 2" come with the package. Not sure what the second one does, maybe electric brakes?

I made a deal with the dealer when I bought my truck that they would sell me the hitch for their cost, and mine came to 214 dollars with tax. So if they are charging 260 bucks their making 60 bucks on the hitch.

Hope this helps.

DD

DD,

Excellent news! I was poking around the other day and found where the relays will go. Not sure about the trailer tow 2 relay, maybe someone can help identify what its purpose is...

What hitch did you get Class III? Class IV? ALso did it bolt on and not need any welding?

I found the wire bundle also, its tied up near the inside of the bumper near the license plate correct?

Thanks!

JohnBoy
