Has anyone else that is used to driving 4x4 noticed an excessive
amount of wheel skid when in four wheel drive on dry pavement?
When I pulled into my parking lot this morning I had to turn on 4x4 for
a second to get through some ice. The parking lot itself is clear and I
noticed a LOT of popping and wheel skidding when I was making turns.
Turn 4x4 off and it goes away. Happens in 4 hi and lo.
I know 4 wheel drives do this and have driven many, just seemed
excessive and don't remember it on this truck before.
Thanks,
Chris

Sounds normal to me. My buddies Chevy does the same thing, you can't really even drive his on dry pavement in 4WD.

Have you checked the front diff to see if it has any fluid? Nissan is have quite a bit of trouble with near-empty and empty diffs front and rear.

Excessive? ..I dunno, but I think this is the reason they tell you not to use 4WD on dry pavement.

Sounds normal to me too... mine does the same thing. I am pretty sure it has to do with the front end geometery somewhat as well - inside wheel turning smaller radius than outer wheel while under a load etc... makes you wonder how Subaru's and others work so well ???

The QX56 is full time. We should all convert over to their drive train

I've heard of this on other truck forums--problem is that there is no diff. between front and rear. When you turn, the front cuts a larger path that the rear, so the front wheels try turning slightly faster than the rears. In 4WD, the front and rear axles are locked together and are forced to spin at the same speed. The front wheels get all bound up and "hop." Cars like the Subaru with AWD, and some SUV's I think, now do have the extra diff, eliminating the wheel hop. And yes this does cause a lot of stress in the drivetrain and is why they say to not use it on dry pavement. It happens on Ford, Dodge and Chevy, particularly the HD models that have solid front axles. I think I remember reading somewhere that it is less severe on vehicles with independent front suspension.
