Does your Titan have the tow package with the LSD rear end? I had just bought a 04 without the LSD when I came across this forum and read about all the rear end problems. I went to a local dealer and looked underneath about a dozen Titans-some were 04's and some were 05's. The only ones with the alloy finned differential plate were the 05's that had the tow packages with LSD. I feel like I should be fine and only the 04 LSD's had the problem. Any light you can shed on this would be very much appreciated. Thanks..........Pompano

My truck is an 04. I have the big tow and the off road package. It does not have the LSD rearend. It has an electronicly locking diferential. At about 7000 miles the rearend sounded great. Read all the problems and decided to change the rearend fluid to the synthetic. The fluid that came out was silver in color. Big chunks of the spider gears came out also. Took it back and they installed a 05 rearend. If you have an 04 truck I would highly suggest putting in 70W140 synthetic fluid. This is what the factory is puttin in the 05's. It will take just over two bottles of fluid. Hope this helps.

Here's a stupid question: How do I check the rear differential fluids and if I need to add or change, how to?

If you look at the back of the differential cover, there is a threaded plug in the cover. Screw it out. If there is any fluid coming out then there is plenty. If none comes out then stick your finger or something that has an angle in and point it down. If the fluid is just under (<1/8" or so) then you are OK. If greater then you will need to add the correct fluid.

Ok. Now I know. Thank you for the input. Is that also where the fluid is added?

Have problem with my rear diff!!! Took on trip up to Maine with snowmobile trailer, 2 sleds in it. Has diff lock light start flashing then come on solid. Got to my camp with no problems but light. Drove home had no light until 20 minutes from house (4 hours driving no trailer) Dropped truck @ dealer 3/21/05...diagnosed as shorted switch....picked up truck while waitng for part....couldn't drive, rear end kept locking up and skipped through turns. New rear end ordered...waiting until 4/29/05 release date to come and see if Nissan ships rear end. Love my truck ... hate the way Nissan doesn't care about the consumer that already owns a Titan. maybe the lawyer in Lemon Law will get them to move. Hear in Mass 15 days down = lemon.
All I want is a truck that I'm paying for. Anyone else out there / bad diff. Good Luck

Interesting ...
I have an 04 with off road pkg and the big tow package, but haven't
noticed any of the aforementioned problems. I haven't towed
anything real heavy, outside of my friend in/out board boat. I
have been pretty good about braking it in, but since - I have been
pretty hard on it off roading n such. I also made two round trips
to Montana and back. Mine was produced a few months before the
close of the 04 MY.
Anyone shed any light? I assume that the dealer will pick the cost on any and all repairs and parts for this problem?
Also, have any of you just taken your truck to the dealer to make this fix happen before it get problematic?
Cheers!!
