While towing my boat during last summer I noticed something strange. While towing in 4th gear w/out tow/haul mode and the cruise set on about 70 going uphill this thing will not downshift, it just stays in 4th and growls. Now I have towed with almost all makes of trucks and I've never witnessed that. Has anyone else noticed?

I am not sure but I dont think towing with the cruise control is good for it.

You may be right, and I may be the only person on this forum that does tow with the cruise. I guess I have been lucky so far because I haven't lost a transmission yet from doing it. It just seemed odd that this truck would not downshift when every other model truck that I have towed with did.

I tow with cruise alot. I don't see how it would have any effect on your trans. It is just someone else working the throttle for you. My truck don't downshift either at 70 mph. My guess is that at 70 mph in 4th gear, your motor is turning around 2450 rpm, therefore it is already developing plenty of torque for the task at hand and an upshift is not nessessary. Even on a 4 mile long, 6% grade my trans. does not upshift, and it holds the speed easily. I tow a 5000# skiboat which is fairly streamline and sit nice and low on the trailer. The trailer has 4 wheel disk brakes which makes stopping a dream. I think the truck stops faster with the trailer behind it.

I wouldnt think it would be a good idea to tow uphill with the cruise on, however if you begin to slow down while goin uphill I think it should downshift...maye you have a worn out shift solenoid??? I wore mine out towing a Uhaul to TX in my S10 years ago.

I tow with cruise on with the Titan and on the old F150 it's no big deal at all. I don't understand why folks get all worked up over it. If you want it to down shift you have three ways; manually put it in third, push down on the go pedal yourself until it downshifts (unless you think that's going to hurrt it too...) or increase your speed of the cruise.
I've run Phoenix to Colorado for years. 75+ with the Titan UP hill with curise ON is just a rolling haul. The truck will downshift on its own as needed, but after it does go to thid I pull it back in and hold it there if we're still on a hill. It sings about 4500rpm (oh no, I'm hurting it! lol) and pulls like a mutha. If you don't pull down to third it WILL cycle 3-4-3-3 etc. and this does hurt- my average speed.

Looks like the owner's manual is pretty straight forward about this, though my sales person did not inform me: towing with the cruise is forbidden in the manual. I sort of feel like if we buy one of these things and then go against what the owner's manual says, we're asking for trouble.
I was religious about my 500 miles before towing, then no towing over 50 mph for the next 500 miles, and still have trouble with my tranny shifting from 3rd to 4th if I'm trying to accelerate up even a mild grade...the tach runs right up to 3400 rpm without a shift, and will only shift if I seriously let off the accelerator.
More to follow in the tech problems part of this web site.

Guess I'll continue to be the bad guy.
Granted the book states this (9-29) and has other warnings (5-17) it's pretty evident that these are both stated as safety warning not funcional warnings.
5-17 offers good suggestions for proper use of CC and why.
9-29 offers exented trailer towing tips for safe operation of a vehicle.
None the less it's CC all the way for me. Up hill, down hill, trailer or no trailer. You do 12hrs with a trailer and you might feel a bit differently about it as well....
I wouldn't lose any sleep over it either way.

I agree do what makes the trip comfortable. I do on my suburban all the time and she kicks down and off you go. The Titan stil have on hitch until the DANA issue is solved. Once they step up I'll do the hitch.

Pulling with the cruise on is a safety hazard, not a functional problem. CC has nothing to do with the tranny. I do not use cruise much when towing, however it's just my prefrence and also driving conditions.
My trucks sole purpose for being purchased was to tow. Hell, I barely made it through the break in period. 90% of my miles have been towing at least 4000lbs and at times 6000lbs+
My truck only down shifts while using cruise if I start to lose speed. Other than that, like you posted, it growls and keeps chugging.
Our trucks torque band is serious in the lower RPM's, and can probably generate enough torque to keep the speed where you have it set.
Now, if your truck is growling and steadily losing speed without ever down shifting, you have a problem. I hope not!
Do some more field testing..
